Cloud computing will have a tremendous impact in the years to come. Gartner has already predicted that it will be the next big step for both technology and the ability for businesses to adopt it. But the question begs, do businesses want to take a risk with something that is not fully mature?

There have been a lot of research and publications released on how cloud computing will reduce the costs of corporations. For instance, rather than having their IT costs or operational cost as a fixed cost that is incurred annually, cloud computing , on an external cloud, will allow corporations to adopt a “pay-as-you-use” approach much like a utility. Offering a more flexible structure, corporations could use their budget more effectively in the areas of Growing the Business and Research and Development instead of getting bogged down in Operational Costs.

As it stands, Gartner indicates that the latter is taking up a huge piece of the budget pie for almost every corporation in every industry. Thus, a business case presents itself where Cloud Computing can be utilized freeing up resources in the corporations and allowing businesses to grow and expand.

So how do you sell such a technology to corporations to get them to be an early adopter? Prove to them, that it would cut costs and increase productivity for their employees. Only by implementing a proof-of-concept that it works, can senior management be thoroughly convinced that it is a risk worth taking. If it pays off, it could introduce them the competitive edge they need over their rivals.

Unsure of what cloud computing is? Take a look at this video by Salesforce, a provider of CRM solutions over a cloud infrastructure.

Going through Hell just to make it to Heaven

That seems like an appropriate tagline for me. I just graduated from Singapore Management University on Tuesday with a BSc in Information Systems Management. Now, I have a week’s worth of rest before I dive headlong into the Practice department of SAS institute till mid-July. 2 weeks after that, I will commence my career as a Management Consultant in the Global Markets space in Accenture.

It’s seems great that I have my life planned for the next 3 months but at the same time, it’s another mountain to climb, having just got past 1.

You make great friends in university, you develop your talents, you learn how to work with others, and you discover a certain type of people that you really cannot work with no matter what you try. That’s the reality of it. Not everyone can work together with each other.

3 years ago, I took a huge gamble leaving my job as a Web Developer in CNET Networks (Now CBS after the buyout) to pursue my studies. As I look back, it was worth it. I gained knowledge and experience that I would not gotten otherwise.

Well, it’s not officially graduation but I’ve effectively completed all my modules in SMU. The only thing missing now is the internship requirement which I will commence in about a month in SAS. Hopefully, my professor replies soon to the availability of the internship.

As I write this, I’m actually preparing for a presentation at noon tomorrow as well as proof-reading and editing a case study that my team and I have written. I wrote like maybe 35% of the thing while my other team member who was super hardworking and efficient wrote 65% – 70%. Kinda felt bad but I was really bogged down by other modules which needed my urgent attention.

My AA presentation went surprisingly smooth with no major hiccup during the presentation. The only mad-dash we had was fixing a session replication bug that we found all of a sudden. Ironically, it was simply due to a <distributable> tag that we left out in the web.xml file of the application.

Basically, after 3pm tomorrow, I would be able to dedicate my entire week to preparing for the Physical Science presentation that we’re doing on Solar activities e.g. Solar quakes, solar storms.

Looking back, the decision I made to leave CNET and head to SMU was the right one. I’ve met great friends, got together with Farah, learnt a whole bunch of new things which I wouldn’t even have thought of Googling like Enterprise Architecture, Integration Middleware, Internet Banking, Derivatives and Hedge Funds. L-O-L man. Really.

Have an interview at Accenture on Friday for a CRM Consultant position. Hopefully that will go through and I get the job. Will be great to have something before I officially graduate. May need a vacation first though. Just to recuperate and regather my thoughts and goals.

Thank God, for the stuff I’ve been blessed with and keeping my life on track on a straight path.

Peace out.
Mohamad Fauzi

I realize that as the months go by I’m getting slightly lazier. Maybe its the burning out effect from doing too much in too short time period. For example, after getting back from my Middle East trip, I had to prepare for 2 summer term courses (Promotions Management and Environmental Science) which I did quite okay. Moved my GPA down by a bit so that’s not too bad. I also did some freelancing and my Final Year Project which I already designed the interface and I need to move onto the JQuery JavaScript portion of the code which can be summarized to being “a bitch”.

Anyway, the term is going to start in less than 3 weeks and I only have 3 days of school so it should be quite short I guess. The only problem is that despite taking only 4 mods (and 1 FYP), I think the workload next semester is going to be at its heaviest which totally conflicts the lazy mood I’m having now. Perhaps once momentum starts again I’ll clutch in and shift up to the 6th gear.

Anyway, nowadays I’m just playing StarCraft and Diablo II: Lords of Destruction again to gear myself up for StarCraft 2 and Diablo III. Those games are certainly going to take up a huge majority of my time. Heh. Once I’m in my final term. It’s all guns blazing and hopefully, if everything goes as planned, I will have Magna Cum Laude printed on my degree cert. =)

This summer has really taken a toll on my bank account. I think despite doing freelance projects and getting quite nice cheques from them, I think I spend a lot more though. Largely because since I bought my XBOX360, I’ve been buying a lot of games and each of them cost like $70 bucks a piece! Shattt…gotta cut down!

Hopefully, my bank account will be replenished slightly by a couple more freelance projects that I’m currently doing as well as with my scholarship from SAS. Okay I shall try to keep a five figure bank account by the end of this year. 2 more semesters to go and I’m done. I’m just looking forward to the day that I end my SMU career.

Wow, I haven’t blogged in a long time. Almost a month since my last post.

Anyway, I’ve been up to no good recently and I mean that I have been spending my days going out, doing freelance web development, playing xbox360, experimenting with operating systems and a lot of facebook lol.

Let’s get to it 1 thing at a time shall we:

1) Freelance web development: I was tasked to create a website + database management tools by this company and I manage to finish everything in a about a month. Not too shabby. Considering it was like after I got back from the Middle East. Hopefully, I can get another client soon enough before the start of the semester to make my bank account a little bit fatter =)

2) Going out: I’ve been picking up TENNIS again. Played with Kangli, posted my forehand and backhand videos on facebook and had a lot of comments on them. The old group might come together to play tennis once more. Yay! Oh and I met a lot of good people along the way too, went out with Hana a few times, tea wth CP, Alvin and Farah, Tea with Saidah the travel bug etc. I had the most wonderful date with my honey Farah yesterday. Weeee…haha

3) Playing xbox360. Oh I bought an Xbox360 the other day and some games along with it. I’ve already completed Gears of War 2 on the normal difficulty and I’m playing it again on the hardcore difficulty setting and right now I’m stuck at a part where the Locust are attacking my base and there’s this place we have to defend and the Bloodhounds are just too fast! Other than that, UFC: Undisputed, Fallout 3, Assasin’s Creed and Resident Evil 5.

4) Experimenting with operating systems. I removed my Leopard and tried XP on its own and there’s some weird redrawing bug that makes the windows leave a trail. I wasn’t too happy with it, so I formatted it again and installed to Vista. Much better, except that Vista was quite boring actually. I needed to do work and maybe to play some games but just too boring lol. So right now, I’ve Time Machined back to my Leopard and everything is just like before.

As I type, I’m actually burning a copy of Windows 7 Release Candidate and I’m gonna try that later. Maybe as a Boot-camped version.

Term 3B is gonna start on June 15. That’s another 13 more days. Not very excited about it but oh well.

Peace,
Fauzi
